A while back, I took my kids to the Praça Assembleia (the Government Park) and I noticed some interesting trees with pretty flowers. They also had these large, brown fruits, and in the inside was kind of white. Anyone know what this is? I've spent about 15 minutes searching online, and no luck. Thanks for your help!

Abrico-de-macaco
ReplyDeleteI took a photo of the label at the Jardim Batonico Rio - says "Lecythidaceae / couroupita quianensis Aubl / abrico de macaco (with accents that comment doesn't allow) America equatorial
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'll look at your photo!
DeleteIf it is what I think it is... they are not a fruit you eat, but the outer shell can make some fine bowls... Not being edible explains why the fruits remain on the trees and not on street vendor tables.
ReplyDeleteAh ha! That's why I don't recognize it! It's not for sale!
ReplyDeleteI can't really make out your picture, but this is what I think it is: http://tinyurl.com/cyugho3 I know it as "cabaça" (the name of the "fruit" in part of MG). It's used for 'artenasato,' and as bowls, cups, shot "glasses" that usually come with artisan cachaças. That kind of stuff. Not edible, but makes for pretty thinks.
